A reputable breeder in the USA will always health test their dogs before breeding. Always make sure you breeder is completing all health tests suggested for the breed!
Due to different breeding practices in Japan and the US, health testings are rarely done in Japan and in the Japanese Terriers. I am the first to extensively health test this breed. Due to the lack of data we do not know any common health issues within the breed, however generally speaking this breed is healthy and many live long lives. As I get more data I may add/remove the listed health testings to better suit the needs for this breed. At this time, the most common problems are allergies and skin sensitivities which are common in breeds with small gene pools. Building their immune systems at a young age, and breeding dogs with no/limited allergies and skin problems is important.
Health testings to look for in a Japanese Terrier:
Genetic Testing
OFA CAER
OFA Patella Luxation*
OFA Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease*
Optional but highly recommended:
OFA Hips**
OFA Elbows**
* Minimum age to test is 12 months
**Minimum age to test is 24 months
The health testing results for my dogs can be found on each of their pages and on OFA.org by searching their registration name.
