Co-Ownership
As a breeder of a very rare breed, with only myself breeding in the country, co-ownership is a vital part of growing the breed. I wanted to create a page to explain my co-ownership programs in the hope to attract more interested enthusiasts of the Japanese Terriers.
Co-ownership is when the dog has more than one owner. Every co-own is different, and so my co-ownership program will not be the same as another breeder’s. I want my co-own program to be less controlling and more of a way for me to have more breeding prospects in my kennel.
My co-ownership requires the dog to be kept intact to be evaluated for breeding. As much as I would like to keep them all, it is not realistic for me to have countless Japanese Terriers running around my house. I prefer to have each of these dogs have individual attention to allow them to be the best they possibly can. Co-ownership allows these dogs to live their best lives with their owners while helping with the breed population and growth.
Co-owner gets either reimbursement of their puppy fee or a first/second choice (depending on arrangement) puppy back for a fulfilled co-ownership. A fulfilled co-ownership is at least 2~3 litters for bitches and 3~4 stud services for dogs.
Health and evaluation of the dogs are done each time to ensure they are still a good breeding candidate. When co-ownership requirements are fulfilled the dog is signed off in which the owner can choose to alter the dog or keep them intact, and the dog is finished with breeding for life unless otherwise noted.
If the dog for whatever reason is not fit for breeding, full ownership will be signed off to the co-owner and the dog is to be altered when age appropriate unless otherwise noted.
I am responsible for all health testing and breeding-related costs. I may also cover the cost of a show/event/class I really want the dog to attend for breed exposure as well. Litters may be whelped at the co-owner's house with my guidance or may come back to me which is my personal preference. The co-owner is free to be involved in the whelping process as much as they like.
This is also a great option for those with interests in breeding and preserving this breed. The main problem with the lack of Japanese Terrier, I believe is the language barrier and the whole importation process. Getting in contact with the breeders of this breed is also very challenging. For these reasons, let me be the "bridge" between Japan and the US and help you help the breed. All of my imports are placed on a co-own and I deal with all of the contacts and travels with the breeder and the dogs.
My goal is to not “control” the co-owner with their dog, but for the co-ownership to be a way for my kennel to have more breeding options to help the population of the Japanese Terriers in the US.
If this sounds like something you are interested in, please contact me and we can talk more!
